Intro
This
Siasconset favorite is tucked into Post Office
Squarein Nantucket, next to a liquor store where
wine may be purchased to enjoy with dinner. There
is a small corkage charge. This restaurant accepts
reservations only for the 6 pm seating. It is
small and simple, with paintings on the walls,
tables with candles, glass covering the table
cloth. This seems to be a favorite of many local
patrons. The dinners and prices are equal to
in-town dining.
Ambiance |
We
had heard about this cafe for years before finally
visiting on a Monday night early in June. Entering
we found a small room with tables mostly for two
or four. A group of eight were enjoying a window
table in the front of the restaurant and at other
tables small children were enjoying being out with
their parents. As we entered, a middle aged couple,
advised, "Be sure to have the lamb; it's spectular."
The chatter and casual warmth of this low key restaurant
sets the tone for a fine meal.
Food |
What
this restaurant lacks in elegance, it makes up
for with its fine food. The crab cakes (a specialty)
were superb. Asparagus wrapped in ham, with mesclun
greens were an unusual and delicious variation. The
lamb, the night's specialty, was excellent, medium
rare, with a wonderful sauce and fine mashed potatoes.
Monk fish was good, but not outstanding; this
is a bland fish that is difficult to make spectacular.
Desserts were outstanding, a lemon tart with a
dip of ice cream and raspberry syrup and a warm
chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream were both
rated five star! Other Observations:
A visit
to Siasconset in Nantucket is always a treat;
the NRTA shuttle bus runs regularly from center
and stops right at the square, so you don't need
a car. Calling to secure a reservation for the
six o'clock sitting is a good option. On season,
you can also call to inquire about availability
later in the evening. Walking around the town,
viewing the near-by impressive ocean beach,
and enjoying the ride make this a fine outing.
The prices are right up there with other in
town restaurants, but bringing your own wine
does make this less expensive. This is not a
restaurant where you will linger, but the chef
is top notch and especially for those in Siasconset
or those who wish to see it. This is a fine
choice, not as pricey or elegant as either of
the neighboring restaurants in this village.
