Intro
21
Federal is a stunning restaurant in a beautiful
old house, which is divided into many small rooms
on two floors. The food over the years we have
found to be outstanding. This year, mid-May, we
visted on a Monday night and found it not quite
up to its usual standard. Hopefully this was just
one "less than stellar experience."
For its upscale prices and reputation, we hope
that this is not indicative of the summer ahead.
Ambiance |
From
the moment you enter this elegant restaurant and
hear the chatter of the crowded bar located on the
far left of the restaurant, you are struck by the
careful design of this popular institution.
Each little room is separated by divided windows
and walls, creating personal dining areas which
keep the noise level down and create a charm of
its own. The large paintings, and framed mirrors,
sconces, soft ceiling spot lights and wood paneled
dado create a beautiful setting. Crisp white linen
cloth, a small candle, and single flower are found
on each table. Noise from the bar may overwhelm
the two adjacent dining areas on the first floor
so you may wish to request another room.
Food |
A
scotch on the rocks was served with both a lemon
and a lime, the waitress apologizing for forgetting
which was ordered. This was an unusual experience
so when we sampled the very average french bread,
we wondered if this was a sign of things to come.
Happily the smoked tomato and curry soup served
piping hot from a stainless pot was smashing! The
little steamers captured in occasional spoonfuls
were an added bonus. The mixed green salad with
roquefort was pretty straight forward, with the
cheese on a crisp cracker placed on the side rather
than mixed with the greens. The salmon with a crushed
pistachio crust was delicious, served over average
mashed potatoes with a few non-descript vegetables
scattered about the dish. The halibut with artichokes
was the chef's solution to add interest to this
popular fish, good, but not outstanding. Dessert
was a shock. A Napolean, usually a light crusted
flaky delight was so tough, a fork couldn't pierce
it and the fruit and cream served with it couldn't
save it. The carmelized bananas served with raspberries
was a delicious choice.
Other Observations:
We have
visited the 21 Federal for many years and dined
in every room, with family and friends, enjoying
excellent food and service. Usually when you arrive
the host or hostess greets you and your reservation
is immediately honored. This night, no one was
at the front desk and although several waiters
noted us waiting, there was a delay until someone
appeared. We like to think that this evening's
experience was an exception. 21 Federal has been
a favorite of ours. We plan to return for another
review early in the summer. Your observations
are welcome.
