Intro
21
Federal is one of the most attractive restaurants on
and we have always loved coming here. No place offers
more varied, charming, and intimate rooms in which to
dine. This year the service was outstanding; every wait
person worked effortlessly to insure perfect dining. The
food, however, did not quite measure up to the atmosphere.
Visitors during the summer may well have different experiences
and we would love to post them.
Ambiance
There is something special about
this place. No doubt about it! Each room has its own personality,
the many mirrors on the walls, the framed pictures, the
use of framed windows in the walls, create small intimate
dining areas. We followed the hostess up the winding staircase
to the Colin Grey Room on the second floor where a number
of tables for twos and fours were placed along the lengthwise
walls of this somewhat narrow room. Ship models and art
work create a nautical flavor that is most appropriate
for the island. At the far end there is another small
room with a tiny bar and two tables that we have enjoyed
on other evenings. This elegant restaurant is exactly
the atmosphere to share with friends or a favorite person.
Food
Our appetizer choices tonight
included a sugar snap pea soup with fiddleheads and mushrooms.
Creamy and smooth, this was a very good choice. The green
salad of the evening was very average. The grilled sirloin
steak served over haricot vert was tasty, but not unusual.
The halibut with a curried cauliflower risotto and sweet
corn was the more interesting selection of the entrees.
The menu also included such standard choices as very rare
tuna, chicken, and lamb. Shoe string potatoes served with
the steak seemed unusual; they were also listed along
with other vegetables as a side choice. Clearly Chef Jaehnig
has been encouraged by the popular response to this old
favorite. For us, the choice of a different potato would
have added creativity and flair to the overall menu. Dessert
included a creme brulee and a warm berry compote. The
brulee was served in two small dishes, one chocolate,
one vanilla with whipped cream and fresh raspberries on
the side, a delightful twist on a old favorite. The berry
dessert was good.
Other Observations:
lost a great friend and leader, last year with
the death of Chick Walsh, the owner of the restaurant.
He was the essence of 21 Federal and his absence is still
felt. He was always at the helm, ready to greet guests
and to oversee the entire operation. This review would
not be complete without expressing our understanding that
it may take some time for this restaurant to regain its
former greatness.
