Intro
Where
can you go to find charm, gourmet food, and, for
those inclined, a great hamburger on ?
The Cafe at Le Languedoc nestled downstairs beneath
the more formal restaurant above is your answer.
Located on Broad Street you can catch a glimpse
of this small intimate cafe, with its blue checkered
table cloths, quite different in atmosphere from
the upstairs restaurant. No reservations are needed.
It opens at six o'clock for dinner only and on
season you need to quay-up about 5:30. This is
a delightful restaurant, with excellent food.
On warm summer evenings the outdoor patio is an
appealing additional option for the cafe.
Ambiance |
For
both steamy summer nights or frosty evenings, this
cafe is an ideal location to unwind from the day
and relax. With a bench across one wall, seating
can be arranged to accomodate twos or fours easily.
There are also several larger tables for groups
of five or six. A cozy bar adjoins the dining area
where you can await your table. The checkered table
cloths, soft glow from the small kerosene table
lamps, and single flower on each table set the tone.
Tall wine bottles line the fireplace. The small
size of the room keeps the noise level perfect for
conversation; though the tables nearest the bar
might be a bit noisy on a busy night. The waitresses
are thoughtful and attentive.
Food |
Once
a totally French menu, which then shifted gears
over the years, this year the trend is once again
more French. The appetizer of frogs' legs with garlic
sauce was perfect although they might have been
slightly more tender. The oysters on the half shell
(4 for $8 or eight for $14) were delectable and
eight were devoured with gusto. The Bartlett tomatoes
were served with Stilton cheese, a perfect blend
of flavors. The entrees of soft shelled crabs with
crispy spaetzle was delicious and the grey sole
served with champignon sauce and spinach was very
good. For dessert we sampled the berry sorbet with
candied ginger and an individual berry and lemon
curd tart which was a treat. However, the favorite
dessert remains one we sampled here last year, an
amazing concoction of phyllo dough, vanilla ice
cream, carmel and fudge sauce that was 5 Star!
Other Observations:
It is
refreshing not to always have to make reservations
for dinner well in advance and the Cafe at Languedoc
offers the opportunity to walk in if you are willing
to arrive before six o'clock. On warm evenings,
there are many tables outdoors, so seating is
less of a problem. Another possibility would be
to arrive around eight for the second seating.
As you peer in the windows you can easily see
why, for many, this is a restaurant customers
return to year after year.
