Intro
Oran
Mor is located on the second story over an antique
shop and across from the Yacht Club, a choice
location with interesting small rooms, each with
charm. The innovative menu is created by the chef,
who came here several years ago from Toppers at
Wauwinet. The food, preparation, and service we
rate among the best found on .
Ambiance |
We
visited Oran Mor Sunday evening of Daffodil Weekend
and were seated in the small dining section of the
bar, an area we had not tried before. The small
glittering bar is curved and most attractive with
only four tables for dining in that room. Perhaps
if the bar were packed this room would have been
noisy, but tonight it was perfect with muted tunes
piped in from the fifties, fresh daffodils on the
table, and an efficient bartender-waitress who handled
the room easily. Just walking up the shiny copper
staircase sets the mood for a wonderful dinner.
If you like your whiskey sours really sour, this
is the one to order. In previous years the waiters
seemed a bit stiff, but the food has been consistently
excellent. Perhaps the best room to request is the
bar, especially with the window view. Often wine
by the glass at restaurants is undistinguished;
here the house Chardonnay and the Pinot Gregio were
excellent. There are several other small dining
areas ideal for romantic dinners or parties of four
who wish to visit with friends where conversation
can flow without the loud background noise of other
diners.
Food |
A
spinach spaetzle with fresh asparagus was very good.
For sushi fans, 9 Asian bites included exactly that,
served with both a horseradish and a piquant dip.
The list of appetizers is extensive and exotic.
Most restaurants appear to have increased the number
and variety of appetizers this year and Oran Mor
is no exception.
For our main courses, one choice was "Ruthie
B's Skate" which was new to us and a welcome
change from the salmon, cod, and halibut so frequently
seen on menus. It was first rate. A hearty
veal dinner with tender chucks of meat in an excellent
sauce, was served with what the chef termed "broken
pasta". Most restaurants have mastered
the artistry of presentation, but sometimes the
eating experience is just average. This is not the
case at the Oran Mor where the entrees are as good
as they look. Don't leave without sampling the desserts!
Both the strawberry sorbet, served with a superb
cookie, and a rich cheese cake topped with a sliver
of excellent chocolate surrounded by a berry sauce
were perfection.
Of note: Oran Mor does not charge for shared portions
of appetizers and entrees.
Other Observations:
By chance
we sat next to a young couple celebrating her
birthday. They live on the island and have followed
restaurants for a number of years, working
in the catering field themselves. They were friends
of the chef, we discovered, and request the bar
area when they dine here. They rated this restaurant
their Island favorite.
