Intro
Autumn is one of the best times to visit ; the weather is delightful, the crowds have thinned and many restaurants offer wonderful bargains. Famed for the signature "Club Car" bar for casual drinking and dining, the main dining room is well worth a visit. The room is lovely and the food is excellent. Sunday and Monday nights we rate The Club Car a best buy for the fall.
Ambiance:
We had not visited The Club Car in recent years; the location at the foot of Main street just above the docks seemed better suited to tourists right off the ferry. On this October Sunday night we were delightfully surprised. The restaurant, which is a step down through the popular piano bar, is most attractive and was crowded with others enjoying the fall atmosphere of the island and the dining. The decor is formal with beautiful windows looking out onto the cobbled street, many framed pictures bordering the dining room walls, and linen table cloths completing the atmosphere of gracious dining.
Food:
There are many choices for first courses, typically caviar, foie gras, crab cakes, smoked salmon, mushroom soup, and golden pear arugula salad. We sampled the last two and enjoyed every morsel. One of us ordered the Beef Wellington Special and the other New York Duck. The beef was tender, medium rare, and very very good. The duck served with Chef Tom Proch's delicate french sauce was rich and wonderful. Desserts, a bread pudding favorite for the Greylady's escort and an excellent lemon tart with just the right sharpness, were the perfect ending to the dinner. Obviously others have discovered this restaurant and were enjoying the evening as much as we did.
Other Observations:
We have never seen this restaurant reviewed and seldom hear mention of it on the island. We are not sure why this is the case, but we urge our readers to try it. We believe The Club Car, especially in the fall with fewer crowds, easier parking, and special rates, deserves your attention.
We recommend The Club Car as a Best Buy for this fall.
