Intro
Situated
on the beach just below the famed Jetties is The
Galley Restaurant. Blue striped awnings protect
the dinners from the wind and glare of the sun,
still allowing one of the few water and sunset
dining views on . A restuarant which
has been on the island for years, it has gradually
changed from an indoor/outdoor combination to
the present which sets all tables with an alfresco
view of Sound. The food is excellent
with prices right at the top of the scale. as
with most restaurants we have reviewed , the appetizers
featured are varied and unusual, and the typical
fish selection is included with other entrees.
Ambiance |
The
view of the beach sets this restaurant apart from
others. Every table is situated so the guests have
a fine view of the long stretch of sand and
Sound. Watching the sunset is clearly one of the
special delights of this place. White wicker easy
chairs and an all purpose indoor outdoor rug add
a casual tone. Green plants hang from the roof rafters
of the awning and plastic sides can be rolled up
and down to accomodate the inevitable changing weather,
providing protection and comfort, along with a clear
view of the seascape. A small bar on the interior
and several small tables provide an attractive gathering
place for friends before and after dinner.
Food |
For
sweetbread lovers, this appetizer served over arugula
won raves. The red beet chevre tower served with
toasted walnuts was also tasty. The evening's special
was a swordsfish dish served with finely sliced
vegetables, resembling a coleslaw. The fish was
light and wonderfully cooked, but lacked any distinctive
flavor. Ocean fresh salmon was a wonderful thick,
beautifully cooked presentation served over a delicious
vegetable combination of beans, and assorted vegetables.
The two dessert choices were a creme brulee and
a zabaglione, berries combined with a rich, yet
light creme, liquor combination, both were very
good.
Other Observations:
We had
not visited this restaurant in many years, although
often observed diners and special parties enjoying
this site. We thought how delightful it would
be to watch the sun sink into the water while
dining near the water's edge. The night we arrived,
there was a spectacular thunder storm. The rain
pelted down dramatically on the roof as soon as
we were seated. The wind roared, lightning crashed,
and everyone wondered if the plastic side covers
and roof would hold, adding to the extremely animated
conversation of the crowded room. During the storm,
the beach and water illumination was spectacular.
Not a leak occurred and we recommend visiting
this spot, for its food, quiet water edge sunsets
and occasional storms.
